Tourism in the focus of the 3rd Forum of Sister Bulgarian- Russian Cities

The 3rd annual forum of Bulgarian-Russian sister cities was organized on the 3rd of June in Varna. It marked the 140 anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Russian Federation. The event was organized by Varna municipality, NAMRB and the Bulgarian Ministry of tourism, with the support of the General Consulate of the Russian Federation in Varna.
Representatives from 19 Bulgarian municipalities, 31 Russian towns and two Russian Associations of local authorities participated. Amongst the official guests were the Bulgarian Minister of Tourism, the NAMRB Executive Director Ms. Silvyia Georgieva, the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Varna, as well as representatives of the Russian Federation Embassy in Bulgaria, the Russian Cultural and Information Centre and the Association of Russian National Congress of Municipalities.
Promoting tourism as a key sector for the economy and deepening the cooperation at regional level were the main topics of the event. The host Mayor of Varna emphasized that direct contacts between mayors are of crucial importance for the good regional cooperation between the two countries. He added that efforts towards transforming Varna in all season’s tourist destination by creating new opportunities for entertainment and recreation within the city and the resorts, including the development of the cultural and sport calendar, are in place. Minister of tourism also underlined the importance of cooperation between the sister cities as part of the efforts for tourism development and transforming Bulgaria an all-year tourist destination.
NAMRB Executive Director Ms. Silvyia Georgieva stated that the Forum is clear signal for the importance of regional cooperation and the willingness of all participants to strengthen the results already achieved. As part of the efforts for encouraging partnerships and cooperation between both countries, NAMRB and the Russian National Congress of Municipalities (the largest Russian association of local self-government entities) are negotiating signing of the Memorandum of cooperation.
On behalf of the Southern Black Sea coast Municipalities the Mayor of Burgas addressed the forum’s participants. He expressed confidence that the partnership relations between Bulgarian and Russian local authorities on various projects in areas as culture and economy will go on.
On behalf of the Russian Ambassador in Bulgaria, the Consul General congratulated the guests and underlined that the Forum is an opportunity not only for the renewal of partnership contracts between municipalities, but also for the development of new forms of cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as activities towards young people, pupils and students.
Within the two working sessions Varna, Burgas, Essentuki, Aksakovo, Kashira, Saratov, Devnya, Pazardzhik, Stara Zagora, Michurinsk, Georgiyevsk and other towns and municipalities presented their potential for tourism development. Guests to the Forum were also representatives from municipalities of Azov, Novosibirsk, Yaroslavl, Samara, Saratov, Syktyvkar, Asenovgrad, Haskovo, Smolyan, Shumen, Troyan and Parvomay.
For the Russian guests special trip to Silistra was organized on the initiative of the Ministry of Tourism.
The Mayor of Dobrich Municipality in Bulgaria signed Cooperation agreement with the Russian city of Tambov. Local authorities of Kazashko village, municipality of Varna established relations with Novorusijsk.
