Representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Republic of Bulgaria, mayors, representatives of state institutions, international organisations, and partners of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB) gathered at Boyana Residence for a meeting organised as part of the Association’s initiatives marking its 30th anniversary.

The forum focused on the development of local self-government in Bulgaria over the past three decades, the role of municipalities in the sustainable development of the regions, and opportunities for expanding international cooperation. The event provided a platform for professional dialogue between local government representatives and the diplomatic community, as well as for exchanging good practices and exploring future partnerships.

In his opening address, Eng. Daniel Panov, Chair of the NAMRB Managing Board and Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, emphasised that the Association’s history is inseparable from the development of democratic local self-government in Bulgaria.

“A strong state is built on strong municipalities,” he stated, adding that local governments are currently facing new challenges that require greater financial autonomy, more active participation in shaping public policies, and even closer cooperation with national and international partners.

Addressing the representatives of the diplomatic missions, Daniel Panov stressed that the experience of European countries in the fields of fiscal decentralisation and local self-government is of great value to Bulgaria. According to him, stronger and financially sustainable municipalities are essential for delivering better public services, creating more competitive regions, and fostering a more attractive investment climate.

Silvia Georgieva, Executive Director of NAMRB, presented the Association’s international activities and highlighted its role as a natural partner of municipalities, state institutions, and international organisations.

“NAMRB is not merely a representative organisation of local authorities; it is a strong centre of expertise and a bridge between municipalities, state institutions, European institutions, and international organisations,” she said.

Ms Georgieva underlined NAMRB’s active participation in European and international local government networks and expressed the Association’s readiness to facilitate new partnerships between Bulgarian municipalities and their counterparts abroad. She also noted the significant potential for expanding cooperation through joint projects, knowledge exchange, and the sharing of good practices.

During the event, representatives of diplomatic missions and Bulgarian mayors discussed opportunities for developing new partnerships and joint initiatives in the fields of local economic development, investment, education, culture, innovation, and sustainable development.

The National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria extends its sincere gratitude to all representatives of the diplomatic corps, mayors, representatives of state institutions, international organisations, and the Association’s partners who honoured the initiative organised on the occasion of NAMRB’s 30th anniversary.

The NAMRB team firmly believes that building sustainable partnerships between Bulgarian municipalities and the international community is a key prerequisite for successful local development, attracting investment, and promoting the exchange of knowledge and good practices. The Association will continue to actively encourage this dialogue and create new opportunities for joint initiatives.
