Historian Bethany Hughes shows Bulgaria to the world on May 24

In the long-awaited Bulgaria episode of the latest season of the world-famous series "Treasures with Bethany Hughes" on Viasat History, Prof. Hughes travels to our country, where a mosaic of cultures has created an incredible history.

In the lost Greek village of Heraclea Sintica near Petrich, she discovered traces of a basilica and an ancient sanctuary for the goddess Nemesis. In Prof. Hughes's own words, this was one of her most memorable trips to Bulgaria, as she attended excavations there, which are still ongoing. Thanks to special access to the Valley of the Thracian Kings, Bethany enters the climate-controlled 2,300-year-old Thracian tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with outstanding living wall paintings that are still intact. In the Museum of Kazanlak, she shows us exceptional finds. The Episcopal Basilica of the Late Antiquity of Philippopolis has been one of the most visited cultural and historical sites in Plovdiv for the third year already, and the unique mosaics from the 4th-6th centuries, located on two levels, aroused the interest of Prof. Bettani as well Hughes. In April, in the archaeological underpass of Plovdiv, located a few meters from the Episcopal Basilica, the late antique building "Irini" was opened after renovation, whose mosaics rival those in the Basilica in beauty.

This late antique building, the Episcopal and the Small Basilicas were included in the Indicative List of Bulgaria in UNESCO in 2018, but before the final approval, there is still a lot of work to be done on the preparation of the nomination file. Experiencing the fiery Nestinar ritual in the village of Kosti, where she was recognized and welcomed with exceptional hospitality and delight, and witnessing how the Pomash community painted the faces of their brides in the village of Ribnovo, Bettani discovered how many ancient traditions still exist in Bulgaria.

Bethany ends her journey in front of the Buzludzha monument, a communist relic symbolizing the clash of the pain of remembering the past and the danger of forgetting its lessons. Before that, however, we will see the Rila Monastery, the lakes and the Paneurythmia and more customs, cultural sites and sights of Bulgaria through the eyes of the world-famous historian.

The third season of "Treasures with Bethany Hughes", premiering on Viasat History every Friday at 22:00, offers unprecedented access to new discoveries and is another unforgettable journey through the history of human civilization in six remarkable episodes. In Bulgaria, Bethany visits one of the world's best-preserved Roman amphitheatres, in Turkey - newly discovered ancient scenes, as well as the beautiful forests of Estonia, tracking remarkable achievements of engineering, culture and faith. In this most recent three seasons, Prof. Hughes also visited Oman, Azerbaijan, Albania and the Adriatic Sea.
