At a Meeting in Sliven, the Minister of Education, Local Authorities, and School Principals Discussed Current Issues

Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev held a working meeting with principals and teachers from schools in the municipality of Sliven. The meeting, held in the “May” Hall, was opened by Mayor Stefan Radev.

Together with the other participants, the Minister discussed current issues related to changes in preschool and school education, student enrollment and retention, as well as organizational matters.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Minister Valchev for being here with us today! I hope this meeting will be useful for our community, for all leaders in the education system, and for all teachers who now have the opportunity to address their questions directly to Minister Valchev,” said the mayor, wishing everyone a successful school year.

In turn, Krasimir Valchev thanked the municipality of Sliven for its hospitality and good partnership. He briefly outlined the key topics for the Ministry of Education and Science (MES). One of them was the challenges related to the Ordinance on Inclusive Education and the need for dialogue, as well as the role of parents in the education of children with special educational needs.

The Minister also raised the issue of the increasing need for a functional system of preventive measures and sanctions in the learning process.

According to him, the main challenges facing the educational system are functional literacy, motivation for learning, and the large number of students with low interest in participating in education, which is directly linked to parental support.

Regarding mechanisms for student retention and enrollment, Valchev stated that they should be active as early as preschool, since research shows that early childhood is crucial for better educational outcomes.

Other topics highlighted during the meeting included admissions at the lower secondary level, as well as the need to increase the number of hours dedicated to general education subjects.

Present at the meeting in the “May” Hall were Members of Parliament from the Sliven constituency Desislava Taneva and Maria Belova, Regional Governor Chavdar Bozhurski, Head of the Regional Education Department in Sliven Boyan Aksakov, municipal education experts, and school teams of specialists.

Earlier the same day, the Minister of Education, together with Sliven MPs, Mayor Stefan Radev, and the Regional Governor, visited “Yuri Gagarin” Primary School in Sliven, where current education-related issues were also discussed.
