Administrative-territorial and territorial division of the Republic of Bulgaria
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of Bulgarian Statistics, the National Statistical Institute published an official report about the Administrative-territorial and territorial division of the Republic of Bulgaria in 2019. The report will have annual editions and provides information about the amendments of administrative-territorial and territorial units in the past year, data about population, territory and administrative-territorial and territorial units in the country, as well as maps, municipality ranking by population density, mayoralties and settlement’s population, comparative charts, NUTS description, legal framework, etc.
In 2019 the territory of Bulgaria administratively is divided into 28 administrative districts, with 265 municipalities, in which there are 3 177 individual mayoralties. There are 5 257 settlements, of them 257 towns and 5 000 villages, while the settlement formations were 163 (including 8 of national and 155 of local importance).
Besides that Sofia capital city municipality and the towns of Plovdiv and Varna are sub-divided into administrative-territorial regions: Sofia capital city municipality into 24 regions, city of Plovdiv – 6 regions, the city of Varna - 5 regions.
