Bulgaria and Romania Endeavor to Deepen the Mutual Cooperation between Local Self-Government Authorities

The national delegations of Bulgaria and Romania met within the framework of 135th European Committee of the Regions Plenary Session (CoR) on 26 June in Brussels.

The Bulgarian side was represented by the mayors of:  Gabrovo - Ms. Tanya Hristova (President of the national delegation in CoR); Montana – Mr. Zlatko Zhivkov; Lovech – Ms. Kornelia Marinova; Pravets – Mr. Rumen Guninski; Sliven – Mr.  Stefan Radev; Peshtera – Mr. Nikolay Zaychev; Gotse Delchev – Mr. Vladimir Moskov; Popovo – Mr. Ludmil Veselinov; Samuil – Mr. Beytula Sali; Gorna Oryahovitsa – Mr. Dobromir Dobrev.

Romanian Delegation was represented by its President Mr. Robert Sorin NEGOIȚĂ, mayor of District 3 of Bucharest Municipality and representatives of: Dudeștii Noi Timiș County; Constanţa; Harghita County Council; Sibiu County Council; Ialomiţa County Council; Cluj-Napoca; Cugir; Gura Humorului; Vulcana-Băi, Dâmbovița County; Cumpăna, Constanța County; Luncavița, Tulcea County; Ştefan cel Mare.

The meeting was organized on the initiative of both delegations and is the first of its kind organized jointly with CoR services. The main goal was to intensify the bilateral relations not only in support of mutual positions in priority spheres, but also to deepen and widen the cooperation on local self-government level between the two countries. 

The Presidents of both delegations presented in brief the activities of their national delegations in the CoR and also of their respective national associations of local authorities. The discussion focused on many issues of key importance for the local authorities in Europe, including Cohesion policy, EU funds, culture and education. Particular emphasis was placed on the possibilities for cross-border cooperation and joint infrastructural projects. In addition all participants expressed common willingness for enhancing the bilateral cooperation through exchange of experience, best practices and joint activities.

As a result of the widespread positive outcome of the event, additional discussions and future bilateral meetings between local authorities, participating in CoR were planned.
